Many of us automatically judge others, when we have no idea who they are or what their story is, we have not walked a mile in their shoes. That can also be said about our "heroes" or "white hats" we don't really KNOW them, but it's often their actions that speak louder than words that convinces me we are on the right path. A Personal Story - Shared By Lin Wood on Fathers Day
I assume every child thinks about his or her father on Father’s Day. Especially when his or her father has passed on. Memories.
You know my testimony. I have always been open about my life when asked. I sure never hesitate to admit that I am imperfect. So was my father. My mother too for that matter. We are ALL imperfect.
After a childhood of experiencing domestic violence, at age 16 and in the 11th grade in 1969, I came home and found that my father had beaten my mother to death. Alcoholism was the root cause. In a different situation, my mother could have picked up a knife and killed my father.
Despite the fact that his acts took my mother from me and my sisters, I forgave my father. I even helped raise money to get him a lawyer as I did not believe he was guilty of murder as charged. 5 years later, he pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter. Justice was achieved as his prison sentence lined up with his crime.
We don’t get to pick our parents. God picks them for us. He uses them to teach us. We learn good from them and we learn bad. The issue is not so much how they lived their lives as it is what did we learn from their lives.
My parents loved me and my siblings. They taught me love.
My parents’ actions often hurt me. They taught me how to suffer hurt and survive it.
My parents taught me forgiveness. They always forgave me when I made mistakes. I forgave them for their mistakes.
God commands us to honor our fathers and mothers. The commandment contains no exceptions.
My father died in 1991, a month after the birth of my youngest child. He was able to hold Channy before he died. He knew all of his grandchildren. They called him Granddaddy Dog as he loved to bark at them and make them laugh.
I have missed my mother since 1969 and my father since 1991. Today on the day on which we honor our fathers, I think about my Dad. Even though I ended up being more of a father to him after 1969 than he to me, I always enjoyed talking to him. He brought his own brand of wisdom to every discussion.
Even at age 68, I wish I could talk to my father now about the extraordinary times in which we live and the attacks waged against our freedom and his son. But I cannot.
Here’s to you today, Dad. I pray that I will see you and Mom for eternity with our Father in Heaven. We will have a lot of catching up to do.
