In dysfunctional systems, the healthiest person can be framed as the problem. We can see this show up in families, work places and even in trials. When someone threatens an unhealthy system, the system does not say, 'thank you for exposing this', they say 'how dare you?" No one thanks you, they set out to make you a monster in 3 different ways.
1- Person naming pattern gets put on trial.
Not the behaviour, not the history, not the dysfunction, it's the person who finally says, "this is what's happening."
If system can make the witness look difficult, it doesn't have to answer the testimony.
2- The focus shifts from the evidence to the reaction.
Let's say someone points to a real pattern, but people react to the pattern negatively and the focus shifts from the evidence to the reaction and suddenly everyone wants to talk about that person's tone, their timing, their frustration or how uncomfortable they made people feel. BUT discomfort is not the same thing as wrong doing.
Sometimes discomfort happens when truth enters the room.
3- The system protects itself by making clarity look dangerous.
Healthy people ask direct questions. And they set boundaries. And they stop playing along with rules no one is supposed to question. And to an unhealthy system that feels like a threat.
So whether you're watching a family conflict, a workplace dispute, or a trial pay attention to this. Who is being blamed and what pattern are they being blamed for exposing? Because sometimes the person being called the problem is the first credible witness.
